How to choose a good security guard company?

by Orit Pery on January 12, 2016

Choosing a new security guard company is a very important decision for a business, as the decision affects the business’s safety and security. No matter whether this is a condominium, a construction site, a mall or an industry warehouse, a business must take into account many aspects other than cost.

The problem is that when you ask companies for a quote, they will most likely emphasize their strengths, but neglect to mention their weaknesses. That’s why you must ask questions and confirm that your choice is smart.

But how can you know what to ask? Each business is different and requires a different level of security, but a few parameters are a must have for any business:

Basic criteriaHow to choose a good security guard company

This may seem obvious, but the most important criterion to check is that your provider carries a valid license to provide security services in your province.

In addition, you should check the background of your provider, asking how many years of experience it has and whether the provider offers services to others of similar size and scope.

Providing security guard services to other organizations in your industry

As mentioned before, each business is unique, yet different businesses in your industry share some similarities. Check with your provider to learn what the company’s experience is in securing other organizations in your industry. Is the security guard company familiar with industry regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies? Is it an active member of your industry association? Does it customize its security approach based on your industry?

Recruiting and screening

The security guards are the most important part of your decision, as they are the ones who will secure your business and the people within it. Make sure your security provider goes through a screening and hiring process. Also confirm that the security guards have the relevant training to fulfill your security needs.

Availability is a very important criterion to check, and many businesses tend to forget that. Make sure your provider will be available to you at any time after the company has been hired. Check if it keeps a 24/7, 365 days a year emergency response team for urgent situations that may arise.  Also check if you receive a personal response during the night or just a voicemail.

Last but not least… check the liability insurance your provider carries as well as if it has a clearance certificate from WSIB with a 0% accident record.
